Today we visited the community of Gooborre, with our partners at The Tirrim Trust, to commission a second new well and pumping system that were recently installed. But we’re not quite finished with the project yet. The community decided that they want to share the water that was provided for them with three other villages that are quite a long walking distance away. Piping is currently being installed to bring the water to a storage tank sitting on a nearby hill, and from there it is being planned to drain by gravity to cover the long distances to the other villages. This was not our original plan for this project, but we love it when communities work together to develop a plan for how to best utilize the water, and greatly lesson the walking distance for people to get water!
We spent our time with them discussing what things are left to be done, the transition of ownership of the well to the community, the development of the water committee and their responsibilities, and their plans to ensure the long term sustainability of the well.
